Bluebirds Stadium sale nets thousands

Hundreds of dedicated Cardiff City Football Club fans made bids for items of memorabilia when the fittings from Ninian Park were sold at an online auction.

The auctioneers, King Sturge Plant Machinery, reported more than 97,000 website hits and over 500 active bidders as Bluebirds supporters scrambled to grab a piece of their club’s history.

In total more than 200 lots were sold, ranging from the players bath to a sofa from manager Dave Jones’ office, at the auction which closed on Wednesday (May 27).

The goalposts and netting from each end of the ground were amongst the highest value items to sell with the Family Stand End goal selling for £1300 and the Grange End goal making £1203. Both were snapped up by the same bidder.

Dave Jones’ red leather sofa went for £275 while one fan picked up a real bargain when the players bath sold for just £33.

The home team dugout – complete with Perspex hood and three rows of seats was sold for £625 with the same buyer also taking home the away team dugout for a relatively cheap price of £275.

A metal sign from the Family Stand which asked supporters to ‘Please refrain from using colourful language at all times’ went for £225. The penalty spots sold for £175 and £125 with the centre spot fetching £250.

The highest value single item sold was an Omega constellation clock which fetched £2601.

Ian Bacon, of King Sturge, said: “This was an interesting and unusual sale which attracted an awful lot of interest from Cardiff fans not just in the UK but around the world.

“With 97,000 website hits and more than 500 active bidders, the passion of football supporters was clearly evident. Now hundreds of those fans have been able to acquire their very own unique memento of the club they love.”

Club officials brought in King Sturge to help them sell the memorabilia from Ninian Park prior to the move to a new stadium next season. Cardiff narrowly missed out on a play-off spot in the dying minutes of the season and will kick off next season in their new stadium with Championship football.
